What are the rules of Buraco?

  • Each player is dealt 11 cards; two mortos of 11 cards are set aside and the rest is the stock. The seat after the dealer opens.
  • On your turn draw one card from the stock or take the whole discard pile, then make any number of melds and lay-offs, then discard one card.
  • Melds are sequences only: three or more consecutive cards of one suit, Ace low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A), never wrapping. Jokers and 2s are wildcards, at most one per run.
  • A canastra is a run of seven or more cards: limpa (no wildcard) scores 200, suja (with a wildcard) 100, real (clean, thirteen or more, A..K) 500.
  • When your hand empties and your side has not taken its pot, you pick up the next morto. Going out requires your side to already hold its pot and a clean canastra.
  • The hand also ends with no going-out bonus when a turn would begin with an empty stock.
  • Scoring per side: card values in melds (A 15, 2 10, 3..7 5, 8..K 10, joker 20) plus canastra bonuses, minus cards left in hand, plus 100 for going out, minus 100 if the side never took its pot.
  • Totals accumulate; after a hand where a side reaches the target, the higher total wins and a tie replays another hand.
